Sport+, funded through Comic Relief Supporters Club, is an employability and leadership development work-based learning initiative using Sports Leaders UK levels 1 & 2 as a vehicle to attract participants and drive forward the learning environment. Further exploration of work place and employment practices using the ADSAN employability award alongside work experience opportunities and mentoring gives the programme its full scope.

Currently in its pilot phase, 1 Sept 2015 – 31 July 2017, the programme is being delivered by 2 delivery partners Safe in Tees Valley & Carlisle Youth Zone.

The programme will work with 100 young people in total during the pilot phase, 50 with each delivery partner, 25 per year, working towards 3 cohort groups per year. Whilst the programme has a mixed gender approach, at least one cohort will aim to be female only.

Criteria for participants

  • Aged 13-18 years
  • Targeting those who are underachieving / struggling in school / not attending school regularly or NEET
  • Referrals to the programme can happen through schools, local youth clubs or specialist local agencies, e.g. NACRO
  • Participants will reflect the diversity of the areas where they are delivered

Outcomes of programme

  •  Increased attendance and engagement in education
  •  Improved emotional capabilities (increased confidence, communication skills and resilience)
  •  Increase employability skills (teamwork, communication, problem solving, self-management, leadership)


Over the two years, each delivery partner will deliver the following:

Sports Leaders Awards & ASDAN Employability

  • 2 x Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership (7 participants in each group – mixed) – 33 guided learning hours including 1 hour practical assessment
  • 1 x Women, Get Set, Go (personal development through sport) non-assessed Award – 15 guided learning hours followed by Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership/Dance Leadership (10 participants – girls only)
  • 3 x Level 2 Award in Sports Leadership (10 participants in each group – mixed) – 42 guided learning hours, which includes 10 hours practical assessment of leadership
  • All the above programmes will include the ASDAN employability short course, which can be ‘woven’ into the overall programme

Work experience

All participants are required to undertake where possible 10 days' work experience.


Participants will be matched with a mentor. Mentors should have relevant backgrounds and skills (e.g. sport, business, training, etc.) and will be required to support young people to define their employment goals and develop and progress towards personal action plans.

Measuring outcomes

All partners will be required to measure the outcomes from this programme, using Views to upload data.

Tools to measure outcomes will include:

  • Pre & post questionnaires
  • Feedback from participants (using video diaries, feedback walls, one to one sessions with staff, etc.)
  • Case studies
  • Feedback from mentors and business partners
  • Feedback from youth workers
